“Form follows function” is the rallying-cry of architects. It’s the belief that the shape of a building should be based upon its intended purpose. Why design a building that, once it is built, doesn’t serve its purpose?
Ceilings are too low.
Not enough bathrooms.
Hallways are too narrow.
It would be ludicrous, modern-day architects would say, to spend millions designing and building something that doesn’t work once it is up and running.
It’s the same thing with small groups. The “form” of the group must help it accomplish “the purpose” of the group. |

If Jesus was invited to start (or join) a small group, and refused, it probably have a lot more to do with the way we run and lead our churches than how we manage our small group ministries. |

Would Jesus join a small group in your church?
Think about that for a moment. Forget about your goals. Forget about your motivations for offering them. Forget about all the supposed benefits of participating in one. Do you honestly think Jesus would join, lead, or start a small group within the existing structure of your small group’s ministry at your church? |

Every ministry model has it's weaknesses. Small groups are no different. They have their weaknesses and I wont pretend to hide behind them, but there are some benefits to small groups that cannot be ignored. |

When I attended my very first church growth conference in 1992 a nationally known small group “expert” stood up and said, “The way we say it at our church is, ‘If you can read, you can lead.’ If a Christian can read the questions in our study guide, they can lead a small group at our church.” |
